REVIEW: Covergirl LineExact Liquid Eyeliner in Very Black

I love me some liquid eyeliner. It's part of my daily routine and an absolute essential. So of course, I am always open to trying out a new version. What can I say? I just can't get no satisfaction (from my current eyeliners....)

This one from Covergirl caught my eye because of its a felt-tip applicator (A must! I abhor brush-tips) and very compact "pocket-sized" packaging. I happened to have a $4 off coupon which made this about three whole 3 bucks out of pocket. What can I say, I'm a big spender!

LineExact comes in 2 colors - Very Black and Black Brown. It's supposed to be fast-drying and smudge-free. But most importantly, the "ExactTip" applicator tips allows you to apply thin or bold lines both with high precision.

Here's a comparison of its sized against a regular size lipstick - in this case, from Revlon. You can see it's much slimmer but about the same size. (Wonder if they'll start making tampon holders that look like this. Lol!)

The packaging of this liner is quite nice. The plastic is sturdy and best of all, it is a screw top. I'm always pleased when companies ensure that their product packaging is travel-friendly. I've definitely had eyeliner caps come off in my purse and it's quite annoying and creates a mess.

The applicator is like a slimmer Sharpie pen. In fact, it very much resembles those pocket-sized ones on a key-chain you can purchase at Staples. The nip is felt-tipped which I find easier to control than thin brushes but it's also very solid which provides great control and creates very sharp lines, much better than say, the L'Oreal Lineur Intense. That one is also a felt-tipped applicator but very thing and bendable.

Here's an example of a single line versus a bolder line built up from three swipes of the liner. You can see that it is extremely precise. A lot of my other liners have very miniscule bleeding into the natural lines/pores on my skin but any curves or zigzags in the applicator here is purely due to unsteady hands.

As you can see, Very Black really is very black. There is no gray, green, blue, red, etc. tinge to it that I can tell.

After wearing it for a few full days, I can attest to its smudge-free and fast-drying qualities. I can blink seconds after applying unlike other liquid eyeliners where I have to look up when blinking for the first minute or two. I can also go over with eyeshadow or a softer pencil liner without removing or smudging it.

The liquid dries to a slightly glossy finish. It's not noticeable unless you're creating cat eyes like the late Amy Winehouse but something to consider. When a rub test on the back of my hands, the liner does not smudge off. Rather, it comes off in tiny flakes.

If you've ever tried Stila's waterproof and waterproof sparkle liquid eyeliners, it has about the same consistency. The flakes are smaller from the LineExact which I like, as sometimes a heavy hand with Stila's can cause a noticeable flake or two to come off before you're ready to remove it!).

There does seem to be a lot of negative reviews for this product, though. Mostly that the product dries out quickly. I've had it for about a week and so far, it's still going very strong but it's probably too soon to tell.

However, this liner retails approx. $7CDN (currently selling for $5 on Well.ca), is easily accessible at the local drugstore or discount department store, and the Covergirl brand often goes on sale at Shoppers Drug Mart, Wal-Mart, Rexall, etc. in Canada so really? If it lasts even a quarter as long as a premium brand liner, it's still a pretty good deal at a quarter of the price! It's a great product and the unique compact packaging definitely wins me over.

  1. I LOVE it...just two problems.....I can never find it!!! Stores are always sold out, and the ones that are on the shelf are dried out. Very frustrating.
